Summer Seminar; The Summer Seminar committee meeting prior to the regular meeting covered the list of job assignments. Presenters that are planned are Vehicle Lift's Safety operations, Comptroller presentation, DOT, the DOT presentation was discussed and possible alternative may be offered if it was found that this presentation had no new information to be offered, and the 4th presenter is still being considered. Discussion took place of other issues anyone that has a subject that they feel would be a good presentation please contact Harlan as soon as possible.
**Note: Please file your registration forms for the 2011 NYHMA Summer Seminar ASAP.
Sick Call: None reported
State HMA: Harlan noted that there are only 3 other states that have our type of association to assist their bus mechanics with their mission of pupil transportation safety. Harlan will be attending a meeting in Albany NY and he has requested that anyone that has issues or problems that need to be presented contact him as soon as you can so he can bring it to the meeting.
DOT: Mike was questioned on the DEF function and fluid levels of that system. Mikes response was that DOT is looking for the system to be functioning as designed and any defects in that system causing it to be inoperative with a warning indicator would fail inspection. Mike also stated that it is recommended to inquire with your inspector on questionable defects noted by them at the time of the notification rather than wait and call Mike to challenge the defect. Your inspector has all the regulations with them to research if needed.
Vendors:
• Doug Hughes of Kenworth of Buffalo introduced himself and advised all present that he is now the “School Bus Parts Representative” for his company and offered any his services to anyone that would be interested.
• Rob offered his services to answer any questions.
• John Johnston covered their operations and offered to cover any questions that presented.

Round table:
Thomas of JD, inquired to all those present on their guidelines of acceptance of chartered buses for transportation of students when the district buses are not used. Thomas noted that he has had an issue with a charted bus that was not in compliance with DOT and/or State Education regulations of pupil transportation. The information offered from those present covered a broad spectrum of procedures with no standard guideline to follow. Guidelines of what are expected or acceptable of these rented/leased vehicles or who is responsible to accept them as safe for pupil transportation of drivers requirements was discussed at length. Mike from DOT noted his opinion on what is stated by the DOT regulations. Drivers and operators are responsible for safe transportation.
Clearance of Marcellus noted that he has an issue with the oil consumption with MB and the advised needed procedures.
Ed of Sandy Creek has had an issue with the air pressure sensors in the wheel of some of his units, which have broken off very easily.
Vic of Carthage has had a Cummins engine come apart from what is thought to be related to a vibration at idle, John of NYBS noted that it appears to be an issue caused by the compressor of this unit. Water in fuel sensors where discussed again, it was stated that it appears to be water seepage back into the wire connectors that is causing this issue, this is still being researched and will be reported on at a later date.
DEF contamination was discussed, there has been a problem that the sensor in the DEF tank has picked up that there is contamination in the tank and is sending a light warning to the operator. It was noted that the sensor in the tank has a multiple purpose. The importance of maintaining a clean and safe from contamination refill operation was covered with some recommendations on this procedure.
09 C2 has signs that there is a radiator core issue of leaking, generally the left front corner of the radiator.
Bendix ABS/TC modules units have been found to have a corrosion problem where the water or contaminates are entering thru a crack in the housings, this is due to the mounting location.

Next meeting is scheduled for sponsor D&W Diesel and the planned date is 18 May 2011, further details will be forwarded at a later date.

Motion made for adjournment of this meeting, seconded, and accepted.

Thanks again to New York Bus Sales for sponsoring this meeting and their continued support.
