• Meeting held at Johnson City Transportation Dept.

• Cliff opened our meeting by introducing our meeting sponsor John Meehan of Williams Lubricants. John then introduced Ron Greene, Sales Manger for EnerTech Labs. Fuels were the topic of discussion, starting off with Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. The change in the fuel distillation process was explained and the reasons for this change. The changing composition of diesel or ULSD explains some of the problems that the industry is currently facing. These fuels coupled with the increased engine operating temperatures and the use of EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) devices present new problems and maintenance concerns. These problems range from fuel storage, waxing, lack of lubricity to high carbon and soot deposits, along with coking deposits in engines. This affects engine sensors, EGR valves, variable vane turbo chargers, etc. All these things result in poor drivability, a loss in fuel millage, and the eventual illumination of check engine lights.
• With the use of these fuels (which by the way can contain up to 5% bio-diesel with out being listed on pumps) increased fuel system maintenance is now a priority, with many fleets decreasing there fuel filter service intervals. A black substance is now commonly showing up coating fuel filters and fuel/water separators known as Asphaltene. This is the result of fuel breaking down and is caused by heat. Ron tells us that he has seen fuel return temperatures ranging in the 200-220 degree range. This is up from the 140 degree range typical with engines of older technology and is the cause of asphaltene being collected in a filter. Engine manufactures are also decreasing the micron rating of their fuel filters; this means they are increasing the efficiency of the filters by only allowing smaller particles to pass through. The reason for this is injector pintle size. Injectors are atomizing smaller particles of fuel in an effort to get a more complete burn and become more efficiency.
• Bio-Diesel fuel was briefly discussed. If one decides to run a B-20 (20% bio) for intendance it is very important to know what base stock the bio was made from, as this gives the fuel it’s characteristics. Freeze point, plug point, cetane rating, etc. will differ. Bio-fuel that is made from animal rendering for instance will not have the same characteristics as a fuel made from virgin soy or canola-oil. Bio-Diesel also will hold up to 10 times the moisture as ULSD. So this is another concern. There also are no industry wide standards regulating the formulating of this product. From here we discussed Ethanol fuels.
• If you are not running ethanol gasoline at a 10% rate or (E-10) you will soon be as the state has mandated it use. With this use there have been certain problems surfacing in the small engine, automotive and marine repair industry. Some of these problems are fuel tank and system corrosion and as ethanol will break down fiberglass, aluminum, some plastics and rubber.
• Ethanol can also suffer a process known as phase-separation and fuel left untreated will begin this process in as little as 90 days. High moisture content will also cause this phasing out with catastrophic results. What happens when this occurs is gasoline, ethanol, and water separating into layers in a bulk tank for instance until a high concentration of oxygenated ethanol up to 70% is pumped into a vehicle fuel tank with disastrous results. It is highly recommended using a fuel stabilizer to prevent this phase separation, corrosion etc.
