· Meeting held at Johnson City Transportation Department.
· In attendance: Bill Hawk (WCSD), Ron Zielewicz (MECSD), Cliff Halliday (OACSD)
· Our meeting this month was sponsored by Matthew’s Buses, Inc. and our guest speakers were Roger Harrod, Mark Hanrahan, and John Metzler.
· Our topic of discussion was 2010 diesel emission standards. Roger explained that nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions are to be reduced by 87% over 2007’s standards. This will be accomplished by using a Cummins ISB in the Thomas C2 school bus chassis.
· Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology will be utilized to reduce the EGR required, thereby reducing engine heat, increasing fuel mileage, increasing oil change intervals with less frequent regeneration required. SCR requires Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), a mixture of de-ionized water and urea to be injected into a catalyst thereby reducing NOx emissions. The resulting emissions will be a mixture of nitrogen and water being expelled at the tail pipe.
· DEF (urea) was then discussed. The freeze point of urea is 12 degrees Fahrenheit and will be heated using engine coolant. Urea is 2/3 de-ionized water and 1/3 urea. This mixture is diesel exhaust fluid and will be injected at a 2% ratio. Thomas will utilize a 12-gallon DEF tank and the urea tank will need to be refilled approximately every 10 tanks of diesel fuel. DEF is a corrosive mixture and will require storage in stainless steel or high density polyethylene containers.
· Thomas Buses will utilize a redesigned instrument cluster to include a DEF gauge. If run low enough without refilling DEF tank, the ECM will derate the engine performance and flash a warning light that will require refilling the DEF tank.
· Thomas hybrid technology was then discussed. Thomas is expected to have 12 hybrid units out by 2009, utilizing a Cummins engine and Eaton system.
· This concluded Roger’s presentation and a Q&A period was held.
· The meeting was adjourned at approximately 11:30 AM.
· Remember, our next meeting will be held on Wednesday December 17th and will be a joint NYAPT meeting with our supervisors. Please check with your supervisor for a time and location. Hope to see everyone there and we hope you enjoy the holiday season.
