FREIGHTLINER RECALL NOTICE & RELATED NYSDOT INSPECTION
POLICY
(Issued December 10, 2004)
Attached is a copy of a recently received recall notice from Freightliner LLC concerning
possible defects in school bus chassis (FS65) manufactured between 1/1/96 and 9/26/03 .
The potential defect involves 60 gallon fuel tanks mounted between the frame rails.
Field Service Campaign information has been distributed by Freightliner LLC to owners
of these vehicles. If an operator owns one of these vehicles, and has not received the
field service campaign information, they should contact Freightliner/the distributor from
whom they purchased the bus.
NYSDOT policy regarding this potential defect is to advise our inspectors to look more
closely at these buses, specifically looking for fuel leaks as described in the attached
document. If a defect is found as described in the attached letter, the vehicle will be
placed out of service as it normally would if a fuel leak was discovered . While
operators/owners of these buses are encouraged to have these vehicles inspected/repaired
in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, failure to do so WILL NOT
have any impact on the results of a regular NYSDOT inspection of these vehicles.
Action will only be taken i&'when a fuel leak is discovered.
Questions regarding this policy should be addressed to your regional Supervising Motor
Vehicle Inspector.
